Wiley Blevins, world-renowned early literacy expert, is our 2023 Literacy Institute highlighted speaker. At this year’s event he shares thirty-five years of research in classrooms on the seven critical ingredients of phonics teaching that produce the greatest student learning gains— readiness skills, scope and sequence, blending, dictation, word awareness, high frequency words, and reading connected texts. Wiley will also share which approaches have failed, common breakdowns, and how teachers can fine-tune their daily instruction for success.

This workshop will meet the needs of anyone whose goal it is to provide each child with a solid foundation for reading:

  • Classroom teachers and literacy coaches who provide direct instruction,
  • Principals who play a significant role in evaluating teachers’ effectiveness in delivering quality instruction, and
  • District leaders who select/evaluate/review phonics curriculum. Attendees will learn: • The role of phonics in the science of reading
  • The essential ingredients of phonics instruction • How to implement phonics instruction that is active, engaging, and thought-provoking.
  • Impactful phonics routines, including assessment and differentiation. • Common breakdowns in phonics instruction that limit student success
